Seen vs saw

I'm asking my friend if he's seen a movie. He replies:

Yes, I saw it.

VS

Yes, I've seen it.

What's the difference here? Are both OK?

Both are okay.
I saw it last night. I saw it two weeks ago. I answer "I saw it" if I'm thinking about the time when it happened.

I've seen it. I answer "I've seen it" if I'm thinking about how my seeing the movie connects to your question right now.

Usually (not always) the person will mirror how they were asked.
