Seeking a word

Have been pondering this for a while now;
what's a much more decent and most importantly, FORMAL equivalent of the phrase "find out"?

For example, in academic research paper I can't really write that, it seems juvenile to me(just a tad, though)

The context will most likely be mathematical and statistics-related materials- such as "We will use varimax method to find out the problems of each single question item."
