Hi all,
There's a phrasal verb in my mother language (Kurdish) which I'm looking for its equivalent phrase in English. Let me disclose it:
Consider a maths theory like: The square root of any number in smaller than it, for example: the square root of 4 is 2 which is smaller. 9 is 3 and 16 is 4 which are all smaller than the original number.
However, there's some example which breaks that rule, like: 0.5 which its square root is bigger than it, 0.7.
Now what phrase do you use for that example? If I translate the phrase literally from Kurdish, it'll be: a contravention/not/reversal/violation example.
Of course, that phrase isn't merely for maths and could be used in various cases as well.
Now what phrase do you use for that example? If I translate the phrase literally from Kurdish, it'll be: a contravention/not/reversal/violation example. an exception to the rule?

This is called a counterexample, but I'm not sure this is the word you're looking for.
