Seeking

Its from the BBC web site: "Libyan rebels began their uprising in mid-February, seeking to end Col Gaddafi's four decades in power."

My question concerns the present participle 'seeking' in the sentence: are the 'libyan rebels', the subject here, who are 'seeking' or the 'their uprising', the object of the clause, which is 'seeking'. The logic suggests the first, but I'm not quite sure.

Thank you.
