Seek help for understanding a sentence.

Good evening. Here is a sentence I don't quite understand, ' in may the court would convene again; and Lucy would doubtless have been forced into court at that time, had not a remarkable young man appeared on the scene. '

I can tell that the last part is reversed, but I don't know how it could be paraphrased into a normal way. And from the later text I figured out that this young man did appear in the court, however if without the following text, I would believe that he was not there.

Could someone kindly help me with this please?

Cheers
