See to

Will you see to my baggage?

This is, I think, the line we normally say to a bellboy, but does it mean 'will you bring my baggage to my room'?

Not specifically, but here I suppose that is what he will do. See to = take care of; be responsible for.

Is this really common, or just a regional thing? I googled for "Will you see to my baggage" and got one single hit, which is this thread itself! (Google is marvellous. This thread is less than 2 hours old.)

Well, that was a very specific example of the use of 'see to'.

Its use is not restricted to instructing bellboys/baggage.

Google 'see to' on its own and I'm sure you'll find lots of examples.

He'll see to it that ... ---> He'll make sure that ...

get something seen to by someone ---> take that thing to someone to deal with it or fix it

see you to the door ---> go with you to the door and say goodbye

I learnt something new.
