See continents and forests on planets orbiting far-off stars?

What? Are there planets other than ours which have forests? How do you know?

Context:

Shooting a laser at polystyrene beads, scientists have made a mirror that is held together by light. The creation could be a step towards putting ultra-light mirrors in space that would be big enough to see continents and forests on planets orbiting far-off stars.

Top answer

It is only remarking about the potential of the instrument. It did not say that there were forests; only if there were such things, the telescope could discern them.

Hi

The universe is vast compared with our own earth. Why would there not be other planets?

Apparently, the word used for a planet outside our own solar system is 'exoplanet' and the nearest one known is in Kepler-90, also called KOI-351

I'm not at all sure that they know that there is plant or animal life on it

If you want to help find exoplanets, you can do so here: http://www.planethunters.org/
Last year, the volunteers at this site found a Jupiter-sized exoplanet in the "habitable zone".
