Sedative and tranquilizer

ESLBeginnerwhat's the difference between 'sedative' and 'tranquilizer' ?

We often hear the expression "mild sedative."
On the opposite end of the spectrum, we have "animal tranquillizers," which can render the subject unconscious.
I think it's just a question of degree.

I suppose there is some difference in medical terminology. In everyday use, there is not much difference.

The only usage difference might be in wildlife management. Animals are tranquilized in their habitat (tranquilizer gun) so they can be examined and medically treated.
In a zoo, an animal can be sedated prior to doing a medical procedure.

If you visit someone following surgery, the nurse may say, "She's sedated right now. She may be sleeping for a while."
The nurse wouldn't say, "She's been tranquillized."

Would we say, "I usually take a tranquillizer before going to sleep?"
