Secondly Or Second

Hello everyone,

Could you please tell me if either "second" or "secondly" is correct in the following sentence?

"You should do two things," I said." First, you need to start eating breakfast. Your body needs energy in the morning, and that means food. Second/Secondly, you should try to change to a healthy diet."

Regards,

Joseph

  • I would add that the forms in "-ly" can seem prissy.

I would accept either 'second' or 'secondly', but some people don't like 'secondly' (or 'thirdly' or 'fourthly', etc.) at all.

Typically, it's either 'first', then 'second' OR 'firstly', then 'secondly', so you should use 'second' if you're going to keep 'first' earlier in the text.
