Even in cases where museums have a more central political role in public life, either in terms of creating ideas and images of ‘the nation’ or ‘the community’ or ‘the people’ (as shown in Knell et al. 2011, for example) that are then used for political purposes, such as the creation of the ‘imagined community’ of nationality and nationalism (Anderson 2006 [1983]), or as elements for the direct exercise of forms of cultural diplomacy (Nisbett 2013) and general international relations (Sylvester 2009), these uses of them are largely secondary and instrumental in comparison with more traditional forms of political activity within nation-states.
