Second type of the coditinal If

in the second type of the if clause we use = if + subject + past simple / subject + would + verb

my question is if the verb is "be" and the subject in singular do we use was or were?

if he were a student , he would study harder. / Is this correct ?

i mean is it right to use "Were" with the singular subject in this case?

Hi, yes, you can use "were". That usually the most acceptable one in English tests. It's used in both formal and informal contexts.
