0 This is my revised version, please correct it...thanks02br 00------------------------------02br 00The theme of “01u00Anointed With Oils,02u00” by Alden Nowland is about the illusion of the ideal world, which is overshadowed by incapability of escaping the01b00 02b00past. The author uses scent as a way to detour the mind of 00 00protagonist, Edith, and make her believe she is a part of a higher class when she is not. The deception causes distress as fate unravels and Edith is subjected to going back to reality when her father ends up in jail that she has to pay to bail him out of. 00 00Edith wants to be pure and good but misses the moral code of conduct that is a ticket to the ideal world she strives to get into. The quote, “He got himself into it, I guess he can get himself out,” is the turning point for Edith where she chooses the corrupt path with her immorality by disrespecting both her parents, which ironically is quite the contrary of her initial want, “a world where only married women had babies and women stayed married forever.” Edith’s mother is the one who convinces her to forgive and forget, so at the end she takes a taxicab to the courthouse.02br 00-------------------------------01b02b02br 02br 02br 01b00 02b02br 02br 0-
