I found this sentence long time ago while I was looking up the word "second-guess" in an online dictionary.
" It's not for us to second-guess the court's decision - we'll just have to wait and see. "
Today when I reviewed the sentence, I felt like I didn't understand its meaning very much. Especially there seems to be a word like an adjective that is missing between "not" and "for". Am I right? Or if not, could you explain what "It's not for us..." means?
Best wishes.
Hi, you've asked an excellent question. I had never realized how this expression could be confusing for English learners. "It's not for us to second-guess" means that it is not our responsibility, or not our function to second-guess the Court's decision.
