Second grade is no more than a minute old

Second grade is no more than a minute old when Zinkoff gets off on the wrong foot with his teacher.

Hi,

Is it correct to interpret the above as the following? Thanks.

Zinkoff's second grade hasn't started for a minute than he gets off to a bad start with his teacher.

Thanks, RayH.

I want to make sure I get the base sentence right and if "gets off to a bad start" sounds as equally right and idiomatic as "gets off on the wrong foot."
