Second Conditional in Reported Speech

Hello there!

Could you help me with this, please?

The sentence in the direct speech goes like this:

"You will have been learning the language for 30 years by 2050. But trust me, you could never learn the language like this."

Is there a way one could use the Third Conditional in the final part of the text if it were reported in the indirect speech in the past?

He said she could never have learned the language like that. - ?

Is there a context that would justify this kind of substitution?

Thank you for all your hard work,

Yety

YETYland you could never learn the language like this. He said she could never have learned the language like that. Sounds all right to me as the corresponding indirect statement.

  • YETYland you could never learn the language like this.
  • He said she could never have learned the language like that.
  • Sounds all right to me as the corresponding indirect statement.
  • The only context you need is that you want to report what someone else said.
