Second best...

Do you know what my father gave me for my tenth birthday? A copy of "The Will to Power."
"Behold the super man. Man is something to be overcome." Sun Tzu,
Machiavelli, Nietzsche. They were the voices that nurtured me after my mother died.
My father made every question a quiz, every choice a test.
Second best was for losers, (to be on second place?) compassion
for losers, trust no one. Those were the lessons I grew up.

Hi Madhulk,

Not quite; "Second best was for losers" means that his father considered only first place was worth having, and that no other placing (second, third, fourth etc.) was good enough.

PS. Your 'to be on second place?' should read 'to be in second place?'
