'season' without an article

In the passage below, ‘season’ is used without an article. Is this correct? Dictionaries say that ‘season’ is a countable noun.


For six years, we followed an intense schedule. In fall, we worked on serves and volleys. In winter, we practiced forehands and backhands on indoor courts. In spring, we polished our drop shots and lobs. Summer was tennis tournament season.
