Vocabulary

Search sth VS search for sth

1. I searched a job
2. I searched for a job.

Are 1 and 2 the same?

3. Police searched the area for clues.
4. Police searched the clues.

The difference between 3 and 4 is 4 just searched the clues and we do not know what the police really wants to find out, do we?
On the other hand, in 3, police searched the area to find clues, don't they?

I'm not familiar with "I searched a job," but I'm not saying it can't be used.
"To search" can be transitive or intransitive.

But to search X (transitive) is definitely not the same thing as to search for X (intransitive).

"I searched my wallet"
