Scrutinized her essay closely

Cassidy scrutinized her essay closely to find out why she received such a low grade.

HI,

The above is a stand-alone example from an English magzine for senior high kids here. Is "closely" redundant? Thanks.

Thanks, Regards.

But doesn't the word "scrutinized" connote the meaning of "closely?"

Hi,

It can connote that meaning as well. However, "closely" is mentioned to emphasize that the exam

had a great importance for Cassidy. She probably was very surprised and disappointed

to find out she got such a low grade. Unfortunately, she couldn't believe it was her grade.
