screen-in porch

What is it?

What does 'screen-in' mean? Is it a common usage?

Thanks,

I would have written it as screen ed- in porch -- a porch which is enclosed by screening, to keep out the bugs, rather than remaining open. In Florida, where they are common, they are called Florida rooms .

Hi MrM,

Why 'in'? Why not 'out'?

Thanks,

Why 'in'? Why not 'out'?

Because the porch itself is "screened in," that is, enclosed by screens.

I believe the bugs call them "screen-out porches".
