Scream back at someone

Does 'back' mean that that someone screamed at you, or does it mean he screamed and you heard him so you screamed back at him?

Top answer

"scream back at someone" can mean that you scream at someone in reply, after they have screamed at you. It could also mean that they are behind you, and you turn around to scream at them, without them having screamed at you. You can only tell which is meant from the context, but the first meaning would be more common I think.
