Scratch my back & I'll scratch yours.

It comes from sailing days. Not sure of the timing, sorry.

If someone was about to get a cat-o'-nine whipping for some offense, a friend could take it for him, bearing the scratches on his back. Then the first friend is indebted to take the next one for him.
