scrapping

Hi,

I have a question about this word, "scrapping", when I was watching Prison Break, what does it mean in this context? Does it mean to get rid of something unuseful, or to convert sth. to scrap ?

Thanks for your help.

S: Man killed the vice- president's brother. and in a month, he's getting the chair, which means no one up this river is more dangerous than him, 'cause he's got nothing to lose now. What are they gonna do? Kill him twice?
M:There a way I can get to him?
S: Oh, no. The only time those boys get out is for chapel and P.I.
M: PI? What's that?|
S: Prison Industry. The guys that get along, get to work. You know, painting, scrapping, making mattresses, you name it. I wouldn't get excited, though, if I were you, Fish. You ain't sniffing none of P.I.
M: Why's that?
S: 'Cause John Abruzzi runs it.

I've got to think it's a typo or misspelling. " That is, breaking down something which has been discarded and separating the parts which may be recycled or put to some other use, for example, sold as used auto parts. "Scrapping can be "getting rid of something unuseful," as you say, but that would be considered "cleaning up," and doesn't sound like a prison job.

  • When you put it next to "painting," I naturally think of "painting and scraping," where "scraping" is often an important part of preparing a surface to be painted, or repainted.
