Scramble

Hi,

"Reactions to Donna's announcement are mixed as the press scrambles to meet their deadlines. All parties involved pick up the pieces of their lives that were shattered by Donna's shocking statement. "

What does 'scramble' mean here?
What does 'that' modify here?

Thanks a lot.

Hi Alphecca,

Thank you for yor explanation.
I think 'lives' means 'a thing' here, and how can a thing be shattered by something?

Thanks a lot.

Shatter means to break into pieces. For example, the rock shattered the window.
Lives can be shattered, too. For example, friendships and relationships can be broken, you can lose a job, or health. Someone important to you could die. If these important things are broken, then your life can be shattered.
