I find the allusion on this website. However, I can't understand that the 3M company is in America, but the painter make a ethic slur about the Scotch. I think that if the Scotch has a stiff impression of thrift in west country. Am I right?

The Scots were known for being very thrifty. The locals in Scotland use the word "mean" for someone who is extremely thrifty.
The word "Scotch" meant a special kind of whiskey. It was not to be used to describe us or our heritage. My mom would correct me if I used "Scotch" to describe someone in the family.

Wow! Interesting. I think most of Chinese can't distinguish the Scottish from Scotch. Just like that we consider the Crusades as the action of Christianism. And I know that in fact, it's operated by Catholicism two days ago. Haha...shame...

It is interesting how non-native speakers learn epithets and other emotionally-charged words and also have to learn not to use them. Even American presidents make social gaffs (Bush's highly inflammatory and insensitive use of "crusade" in 2001) that can cause an international uproar! So
