scoop up body

Hello! I'm doing a translation work for our text named "The diary of the unknown solder"which was written by a soldier in Allies nation. He described a bombardment by German planes and after the bombardment he wrote: "When I came to(the ground), Axis planes had gone and the few survivors that were left began scooping up bodies." I have a confusion about "scoop up body"here. Is it means the survivors "lift corpse" or the survivors "got up"?

Thank you in advance!:)

So the phrase means that the survivors dealt with the corpse but not a movement only on their own?
