Scientific "bench"....

Hello. I was reading a scientific journal and ran into this phrase, scientific bench, and would like someone's help to interpret the meaning of the word "bench" in this context. The phrase in interest is used in the following sentence: He recommends that people who are considering the field first ground themselves in both the sicnetific bench approaches and the theoretical models of how the brain works.

Thank you so much in advance.

The "bench" in any laboratory is the long table where practical experiments are done. I would suggest that the writer is suggesting that people wanting to work in this area of study should firstly read as much as possible of the practical experiments which have been done and repeat some of this work as well as studying the theoretical ideas of how the brain works.
