I saw Arnold's announcement on Leno last night. I was reminded of the first time he was on Letterman's show. Dave asked Arnold what the meaning of "Schwarzenegger" was. Arnold said it meant "Black Plowman." Letterman shot back, "So tell me Arnold, how do the Kennedys feel about having a 'Black Plowman' in the family?"

I think he means that if Arnold were to become "English" (i.e., from England), he could wrest the prime-ministership from Tony Blair, since Tony Blair's in political trouble. Gray Davis, governor of California, is a California Democrat, and is in political trouble. If Arnold got out of the way by going to England, the California Democrats would have one fewer challenger to worry about.

Well, 'schwarz' is German for black and my little Collins German Dic says 'Egge' is a harrow so that sounds right.
I suppose Ah-nuld is happy as long as no-one calls him a ham-and-egger But if I was a Californianite, Northern or Southern, I'd be voting Gary Coleman for the refreshing honesty of his campaign slogan 'I'm probably the least qualified for the job', inaccurate though it is. Though his best chance is probably to take part in a tour round the Governor's mansion, get mistaken for the son of the Governor's Chief of Staff and allow hilarity to ensue.

A better explanation is "a man coming from a place called Schwarzenegg". egg ist not Egge = harrow, but the southern German spelling Egge = Ecke = place or small township.

Not to me. A harrow is not the same as a plough, you city-slicker.

Arnold is dead wrong. "Schwarzenegger" does not mean "black plowman"; that would be "Schwarzpflüger," from Pflug , 'plow' (BrE 'plough') and pflügen , 'to plow.' His name consists of two parts: "schwarz-" ('black') and "Egger" (several meanings). Some ignoramuses have misunderstood the morpheme boundaries of that name and divided it into "Schwarze" + "negger," claiming it means "black Negro." *****.

The main problematic part of the name is "-egger." It could mean "harrower," which is not a plowman but a farmer who uses the harrow ( Egge in German); it could mean "someone from a corner of land" (from German Eck(e) , 'corner' or Egg , pronounced /egg/ in Bavarian; it could be a variant of Acker , plural Äcker ('field'; 'land'; 'soil'; cognate of "acre").
Schwarz looks easy but it isn't. It can mean "black" (very dark-brown, blackish soil); it can also mean "very dark," "shadowy" (being surrounded by tall fir trees that cast their shadow on the field, thus making it look black, as compared to bright, sunlit fields).

So, what does the name mean in English? Definitely "Blackacre," "a man from Schwarzenegg " (from place name + "-er"); definitely not "harrower" ( Egger , the "profession") or plowman. And Schwarzenegg literally means "black corner/field/acre," whether through the color of the soil or being located in the permanent shadow of trees. The now archaic "acre" used to mean "field or plot of land," which German Acker still means.
There are exact English surname and place name equivalents of "Schwarzenegger": "Blackacre" and spelling variants. There exist also the more common opposite place names and surnames "Whitacre," "Whiteacre," "Whittaker," and variants which literally mean "white field"; "white" in the sense of "light-colored (soil)" or "bright, sunlit (field)."
