School is bad for children

Below is my essay on this topic. Please help me check it and give me some comments on all aspects of writing. Thanks so much in advance. Emotion: smile)))

For centuries, many people believe that school is ideal environment for education. This view sounds convincing, but it cannot be denied that this kind of educational system has some adverse impacts on students. In my opinion, school should not be built for children due to two main reasons including causing negative backwash effect and damaging the nature of learning. This essay seeks to investigate the drawbacks of school in relation to the development of children.

School, functioning as an original form of education, plays a crucial role in the development of students. Beside knowledge on several subjects, a variety of basic skills taught at school provide students with fundamental cognitions. For example, at school, students can learn how to raise their voice on a matter or have appropriate behaviors towards the elder and so on. Good and Brophy (1986b) highlighted the importance of school that the learning of specific knowledge and skills were a direct result of classroom teaching. Moreover, teachers can help students gradually gain their confidence through daily lessons. According to a research conducted by Health Promotion Research Centre of National University of Ireland, it is found that nearly three-quarters of students participating in the survey reported that they were encouraged to express their view in class. Thus, schooling is somehow beneficial to the growth process of children in terms of general academic performance and moral education as well.

On the other hand, the school system running the improper teaching and testing method could result in a backwash effect in a negative way. In fact, good tests as an advantageous educational assessment tool would be effective in promoting better knowledge absorbing and delivering. However, according to Cheng (2005), the test may cause the irrelevance between the learning value and the course ambition. Owing to the standardized testing program, teachers, who take responsibility for ensuring the lessons comprehended by students, are forced to narrow the curriculum and cut down on instructional time. Those changes would lead to the phenomenon “teaching to the test”, which leads to false learning perspectives among students. The negative backwash effect seems to be the perfect reflection of the current school educational system directly affecting the academic performance of students.

Another line of thought on the drawbacks of school demonstrates that schooling causes the destruction of the natural learning process among students. The top-to-down, teach-and-test method along with regulations has impeded children from learning creatively and actively through their instincts for discovering things at the very first step of learning. According to Beghetto, R (2014), regulations and school disciplines force teachers to keep class silent almost time without few or no extra-curricular activities. Moreover, despite theoretically appreciating the students’ imagination and curiosity, teachers, in fact, show little interest in several questions kept asking by one student in a full-size uclass. And, Scott (1999) explained that it is because they see those students as disruptive ones in lieu of incentivizing them while delivering their lessons. Furthermore, the pressure of being compared to others and tested contributes to distorting the students’ process of exposing, thinking and then generating new things. Both rules formed by school and educational method taught by teachers have a detrimental impact on their purity of creativity and curiosity.

In conclusion, The old school system with constant learning and assessing seem outdated towards twenty-first children generation. Therefore, regarding solutions to the issue, it would be better if there would be changes in the curriculum, evaluation and school policy at school. The schooling environment assumes to be an unsuitable place for children to comprehensively strengthen their abilities and it is likely to cause more harm than good to their development in both mental and physical aspects.
