Q) My school used the above sentence for an exam question(with more context). We gave a blank in the underlined part asking students to fill in.

Do you think "..., following thier plan to escape from prison...." is just as fine as the underlined part?

or

you think the second one can be accepted as the correct answer as the first one? Yes. And #2 is more elegant English, in my opinion.
