school essay

Here in Romania we have a teacher that's in charge of only a class. He teaches other classes too but he is in charge of a specific class and its students. Like, if the students have an issue about school they talk with their teacher that's in charge of the class. How do you call that in English?

Where I live, in Canada, it's called a homeroom teacher. The kids commonly leave their coats in his classroom, eat their lunch there, etc.
