Tell us about your academic/career short-term and long-term goals.
How has your Hispanic heritage influenced these goals?

I am fascinated by most of the things that happen in outer space and it is my dream to see people traveling through space at high speeds. I want to live to see manned space missions going to Mars, the moons of Jupiter, and even to the outer boundaries of the solar system. Most importantly, I want to do all in my power to help humanity accomplish this goal. That is why I want to become an aerospace engineer.

The decision of pursuing a career in engineering was not an easy one; especially because it is a very demanding field compared to the less exigent liberal arts. However, my Hispanic heritage has helped and influenced my decision to a great extent. I grew up in Lima, Peru, a city full on ingenious people that can turn anything they find in the streets into something of value. For example, we Limeños can turn pieces of rock into necklaces and broken pieces of glass into beautiful craftwork. These skills have proven useful and they are the basis of my curiosity and ingenuity, which of course are essential skills for any engineer. Consequently, my goal is to apply these skills to the space industry and do research about new space propulsion techniques.

As I have previously stated, I am interested in doing research about advanced space propulsion and ultimately work for NASA. But in order to consummate this goal, I must be the best aerospace engineer. Luckily, I feel that having grown up in Peru gives me a significant advantage over my fellow students because I have witnessed the scarcity of opportunities in a third-world country and that makes me value more the chances that I am given.

For this reason, I admire Dr. Franklin Chang-Diaz from Costa Rica. He is the first naturalized U.S. citizen to become an astronaut and the person that came up with the idea of Variable Specific Impulse Magnetoplasma Rocket (VASIMR). All of his work has made me realize that despite the adversities that minorities face in the United States, everything is possible with hard work and dedication. Dr. Chang-Diaz makes me feel proud of being Hispanic, and I want other people to feel as proud as me. That is why one of my long-term goals is to promote manned space missions among the young generations in South America.

All in all, I want to become an aerospace engineer and promote the wonders of the universe. Many countries are taking the next step towards space exploration and I want Hispanics to be part of it.
