scent VS odor

What is the difference in meaning between the following please:
scent of rain
odor of rain

Top answer

None, really, except that scent usually would denote a pleasant smell, while odor could be used for one that is pleasant or unpleasant. As an aside, there is a word for the smell you notice when it rains after a dry spell, though you rarely encounter it: petrichor .

Thank you, Blue Jay, for that word that I had never heard.
A comment on the original post: Neither ‘scent’ nor ‘odor/odour’ sounds natural to me for rain. I would normally expect the word ‘smell’ (which is neither pleasant nor unpleasant).

I love that word, mainly because I love the meaning. I use it whenever I can.

Perhaps it will become more popular if we all start using it.
