SCARED or AFRAID

How to properly say this please?

- I'm scared/afraid that he's going kill me.

Either one is correct, but we wouldn't use the "that." I'm scared he's going to kill me. I'm afraid he's going to kill me. To my ear, the first one sounds more serious than the second one, but they are both very close in meaning. Afraid is probably more common.
