Can I use them together?

Scared is easy, so I'll skip the explanation.

"Was frightened" is the passive of "to frighten," which itself means "to give a fright."  It's a bit more scary than "scare."

I would not do that. It's like saying that he was in the water and he was wet. Use one or the other but not both.
