scantiness

I would like to use the word scantiness but I am not sure how to use it:

1. This study is about the scantiness of the traditional theories to define metonymy.
2. This study is about the scantiness of the traditional theories in defining metonymy.

Any other suggestions?

2. This study is about the scantiness of the traditional theories in defining metonymy . This is the only one that works grammatically, but I don't think 'scantiness' is a particularly good word choice.
