Scale back, run a load

Hi everyone.

1) 'scale back' - can I use it in the following sentences?

We have to scale back our expenses. (I would use 'cut down' but I wonder if this works as well.)

The group looking for Jimmy has scaled back to 5 people at the end of the day. Most of the them had to go home.

2) We ran two loads of dishes today.

We ran two loads in (through) the dishwasher today. I'd probably use the first one, but could you tell me if the second sentence sounds natural as well?

3) In a situation where you hear thunder outside, you probably say 'It just thundered' or 'I heard thunder', but could I also say 'There was a rumble of thunder'? And are there any other common options you could think of?

Thank you so much!

Ann225 We have to scale back our expenses. ) The group looking for Jimmy has scaled back to 5 people at the end of the day. Most of the them had to go home.

  • Ann225 We have to scale back our expenses.
  • ) The group looking for Jimmy has scaled back to 5 people at the end of the day.
  • Most of the them had to go home.
  • I'd be happy with the first; the second sounds reasonable but I'm not sure about using 'has' and then giving the time of day.
  • I think I'd switch to past tense or leave off 'at the end of the day'.
