Which sentence is correct and why?

My friend says that the food is good.

My friend said that the food is good.

Top answer

Both sentences are good! The only difference is that one is in present tense and the other is in past tense. Now take a look: If the person says "My friend says that the food is good" That person states that all kind of food is good no matter what it is: Fish, oysters, salad, fruit, vegetables or wharever.

In the proper context they are both right.

This one is right if the food you recently enjoyed or are now enjoying is good:

My friend says that the food is good.

If you are currently enjoying some food that your friend commented on at some time in the past:

My friend said that the food is good.

This is also possible. If you enjoyed some food in the past
