Saying it in another way

Hi. Would you say a replacement for the following sentence?

'I was at the university for the whole morning, I couldn't find you in your office.'

I personally don't have a good feeling about the phrase' I couldn't find you in your office' It sounds as if I was looking for a pen and I couldn't find it. What can I say instead of I couldn't find you?

Thanks for your time and help
