Say what?

I am writing this sentence in my personal statement. Is the sentence grammatically sound? Is the tone appropriate for a personal statement.

Giving say carmakers more money would not help their cause.

Do I need to add a comma after "Giving" and "say"? Like this,

Giving, say, carmakers more money would not help their cause.

Thank you!
