Say what?

In the military of US or UK, what does a soldier have to say before he enters the office of his boss/officer? Surely he has to say something to report to his boss that he is coming. He would say, officially, the word "report?" Or something else? I reckon he cannot say "Hello" because that is too informal in that case.
English is not my first language and I haven't yet read enough original English works to find this out. So I post here to seek a favor. Thank you in anticipation.

Welcome to the forums! The soldier would knock on the door, step in, and say, "Private Smith reporting as ordered, sir."

That sounds very natural to me.

Thank you for replying.

But of course, every time you need to see someone is not a result of being ordered to do so. It's just as easy to imagine knocking on the door and saying "Excuse me, sir (or ma'am), do you have a moment?"
