Say somebody

Say students that you already have the answers.

I saw this sentence in a coursebook. I don't understand why "say" is used here. Shouldn't it be "tell students".

I saw this sentence in a coursebook. I don't understand why "say" is used here. Shouldn't it be "tell students".
You are correct. 'say' and 'tell' are difficult to explain to students from languages which do not have both verbs.

Let's say, students, that you (students) already have the answers.
Let's suppose that you students already have the answers.
