Say a word = talk?

The expression 'dumb' helps the reader to understand the state of "you" as not talking
to the narrator at all as if plant does not say a word.

I think the writer of the sentence above tries to avoid the first underline by saying the second underline.

Is 'say a word' similar to talk?
