"saw" vs "met"

1. What is the different meaning between "I saw Tom yesterday." and "I met Tom yesterday."?

2. How do I say and describe in native English that I saw my friend's son has grown up a lot (he is getting taller and bigger) than the last time I saw him in the gathering.

Thank you.

1. If you met Tom for the first time yesterday then use "met". If you already knew Tom then you can use either, but "met" seems a bit more formal.
