(save) to the extent?

I am a little bit confused with the usage of "save to the extent" and "to the extent". So I made two sentences below. Can someone tell me if they are both correct and have the same meaning.

I will do what you told me to do save to the extent that your instructioins are inconsistent with the school rules.

I will do what you told me to do to the extent that your instructions are consistent with the school rules.

Kind regards,

Vincent
