Save to Say
Hi
My colleagues and I are having a running argument in relation to 'save to say'. In terms of use as an alternative for 'safe to say', we all acknowledge that this is incorrect ie: "It is save to say it is incorrect"
However, is it grammatically correct to use as an alternative for 'save for' or 'except' ie: "I do not have anything further to comment on the matter, save to say that the parties will work together to resolve the issue."?
I think it is incorrect and that it is being used an erroneous alternative for 'except' and is therefore not grammatically correct to use in this context.
Wondered if anyone could solve our argument?

In French, the word "sauf" means "except." Save to say, in English, save=sauf. Old foggies like me still use it safely.

So, it is safe - and not save - to say one can use 'save' in place of 'except'
