Save on material

Is this natural?
The smaller the dress the more we save on material which is why the smaller dresses are cheaper.

More natural would be:
"The smaller the dress, the more we save on material; which is why the smaller dresses are cheaper."

A semi-colon would be fine if the next clause start with 'this'' or 'that'. I think only a comma works before a relative clause.
