Savage cut

Question

Over the last three years, every savage cut inflicted by the IrishPlease explain to me what "savage cut" here.Though I know in general "savage" means "cruel behaviour" or "strong criticism".

RTE, along with most other media outlets, has been guilty of covering up the real workings of the markets by contributing to have them shrouded in a mystery. Over the last three years, every savage cut inflicted by the Irish Government on the services and living standards of ordinary people was generally greeted with a question to some economic commentator or other, "Will this be enough to convince the markets?" or, "Will the markets be satisfied that the government is serious in cutting public spending?" The appropriate questions of course should have been, "Who exactly are these markets, did anybody ever elect them to exercise the inordinate power they seem to hold over the lives of entire countries and populations? Why are they allowed to operate in this way?

A 'cut' here refers to a reduction in the amount of government money spent on providing adequate services and living standards to ordinary people.

A 'savage cut' is one that causes extreme hardship to ordinary people. The word 'savage' also implies that the government does not care, or even that it enjoys making such cuts.
