sat/was sitting

Is there a slight difference in meaning between "1" and "2"?
1. One day, I went to my friend's house. He sat on the couch with a frown on his face.
2. One day, I went to my friend's house. He was sitting on the couch with a frown on his face.

Not slight but is a huge difference. first sentence shows simple past (he sat) meas when you arrived you saw him seated. second shows , when you arrived he was siting (but not seated) just at the moment when you arrived.
