Satement of purpose - exchange study in Asia

Hey,

I've been reading that forum and find it incredibly usefull! So I've decided to post my statement of purposse/motivation letter for exchange year in Asia here. I will be really greatful for any corrections and comments (however harsh Emotion: wink). But I'd like to underline that this is not "American-style" personal statement. I'm studying in an European university and have to be accepted for the exchange program here first. Only then my papers will go to the Asian university. So having that in mind I have attemted middle-ground between European "not overly emotional explain yourself" and internationally recognised flattery Emotion: stick out tongue. I have no idea what Asian professors want to read in such letters, so if you know please tell me! Thank you!

Dear Sir or Madam,

With this letter, I would like to apply for admission in the exchange program between University A and University B in summer semester 2015. Currently I am studying in the first semester of the master’s degree in XXX at the University A. By January 2015 I will have passed approximately half of my degree examinations and thus have acquired a solid foundation for studying abroad.

I would like to use the unique opportunity offered by this exchange program to spend my third semester at the University B. I have particularly chosen this institution because of its excellent academic reputation and the availability of an extensive range of courses, some of which are not offered at my home university. I have become confident of my decision from speaking with exchange students from University B. As the field of energy technologies is incredibly diversified, I believe it is crucial to receive all-round engineering education complemented by soft skills and key qualifications. That is why I would like to use the opportunity to take courses in the areas of engineering economy and infrastructure project management, as well as expand my knowledge in the area energy production impact on the environment and impact mitigation techniques. I am confident that participation in University B-classes with their exceptional teaching will directly complement and expand upon my curriculum at home, as well expand my capacity to learn and interpret new information.

Apart from academics, I have other reasons why I wish to spend my semester abroad in Singapore. I have always had a particular interest for Asia, this incredibly fast-growing and changing region, but Singapore fascinated me the most. Firstly, I would like to experience the unique multiculturalism of this country. I like the fact that Singapore is home to people of different ethnic and religious backgrounds and they manage to coexist and collaborate so successfully. Secondly, I feel strong about Singapore policy for sustainable urban development. As our world is facing rapid urbanization, I feel it is crucial for our future to find new and sustainable ways of development. I would like to learn more about this highly-engineered state and how Singaporeans manage to preserve their nature in spite of rapid economic growth.

Given my past history of academic excellence and professional experience, I am confident that I will bring a high level of energy and enthusiasm to the program. Due to my experience of living in different countries and adapting to different cultural environments, I feel fully prepared to manage all the relocation issues and dedicate my full energy to studies. Furthermore, I believe that my international background and interdisciplinary education will add more diversity to the exchange program.

Thank you for considering my application, and I look forward to your acceptance.

Sincerely yours,
